You must use the Arlo Secure App to install your Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell. This article provides an overview of the installation process. You can install the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell with or without an existing doorbell or chime. To install your Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell when you have an existing doorbell or chime:
You must have the following items:
- The items that came in the box
Note:Â These items are listed in the Quick Start Guide. - The Arlo Secure App
- A screwdriver
- (Optional) A power drill
- A 10VA doorbell transformer with voltage between 16-24VAC
Note: When you purchase an Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell in Europe, you receive a doorbell transformer in the package. If your current doorbell does not provide 16-24VAC, then you must use the included doorbell transformer. Before you begin:
- Ensure that your power is off at the breaker
- Ensure that you have all the needed items listed above
- Install the Arlo Power Kit that came in the box. For a detailed guide to installing your Power Kit, visit:Â How do I install the Arlo Power Kit for my Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wired?
The Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell replaces your existing doorbell. You must connect your Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
Install:
- Remove your existing doorbell from the wall.
- Disconnect the wires from your existing doorbell.
Note: Make sure the wires don’t fall inside the wall when you disconnect them from your existing doorbell. You can temporarily tape the wires to the wall to prevent this. - Install your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell with or without the mounting wedge that came in the box.
- The mounting wedge helps you angle your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell left or right, depending on the position of your doorbell and the walkway to your door. For more information, visit: How do I use the angled mounting wedge that came with my Arlo Essential Video Doorbell?
- Turn on your power at the breaker.
- Check that the LED on the front of your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell is white.
- If the LED is solid amber, ensure that your doorbell transformer supplies a voltage of 16-24VAC. If your doorbell transformer is not the correct voltage level, you might need to activate bypass mode on the Arlo Power Kit. - If the LED is off, the doorbell might be booting up. Wait up to a minute before troubleshooting. If the LED doesn’t illuminate after one minute, the doorbell is not receiving power. Turn off the power at the breaker, and recheck the wiring.
- If the LED is alternating amber and white, the operating temperature or voltage is too low. Wait up to 13 minutes for the doorbell to warm up. For more information about operating temperature, visit:
- Launch the Arlo Secure App and follow the installation instructions to connect the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.

- For the Arlo Secure App experience with Library:
- Tap Add New Device + > Doorbells & Chimes > Essential Video Doorbell Wired

To install your Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell without an existing doorbell or chime:
The Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell requires a voltage between 16-24V AC to operate and is designed to replace an existing wired doorbell. However, to install your Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell without an existing doorbell or chime, you can use a plug-in AC transformer that provides 16-24V AC, with at least 1A output. See the instructions below to install your Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell with a plug-in AC transformer.
Note: The installation steps to install the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell with a plug-in AC transformer are different than those provided within the Arlo Secure App. You will need to skip some screens and follow the instructions below instead.
Alternatively, you can consult an electrician to install an appropriate doorbell transformer and chime, with voltage between 16-24V AC, 10VA.

- A plug-in AC transformer that provides 16-24V AC with at least 1A output
Before you begin:
The Arlo Secure App provides instructions on how to replace an existing doorbell with the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell, so you will need to skip past several items before you begin.
- Launch the Arlo Secure App:

- For the Arlo Secure App experience with Feed:
- Tap  > Doorbells & Chimes > Essential Video Doorbell Wired
- For the Arlo Secure App experience with Library:
- Tap Add New Device + > Doorbells & Chimes > Essential Video Doorbell Wired
- For the Arlo Secure App experience with Feed:
- Scroll through the introduction screens and tap Continue.
- Tap Continue on each of the following screens to skip non-applicable steps:

- Locate your existing chime box
- Turn off the power at the breaker
- Find the Power Kit
- Remove the cover of the chime box
- To skip the Which looks like your chime box? screen, select Wires.
- To skip the How many wires do you see connected? screen, select Two.
- To skip the What are your chime terminals labeled as? screen, select Front, Trans, Rear.
- Swipe left through the next several screens until you see Replace chime cover and tap Continue to skip these steps.
- Keep the Arlo Secure App open and follow the remaining steps below to install the Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell.
Install:
- With the plug-in AC power adapter unplugged, route the AC adapter wires to the desired location for your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell.
Note: If you need the AC power adapter to be plugged in, turn off the power at the breaker. - Install your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell with or without the mounting wedge.

- Ensure the LED ring on the front of your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell is illuminated solid white.
- If the LEDs are solid amber, your plug-in AC transformer might not supply 16-24V AC. To check the voltage level, visit:Â How do I measure the voltage of my doorbell transformer?
- If the LEDs are off, your Arlo Essential Video Doorbell might be booting up. Wait for a few minutes to confirm. If the LED remains off, visit:Â What do the LED behaviors on my Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wired mean?
- If the LEDs are flashing amber, the temperature or battery is too low, and the device needs to stay powered for a moment before it can operate.
- Use the Arlo Secure App instructions to connect your Arlo Essential Wired Video Doorbell to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- At the end of the installation process, select None as the Traditional Chime option to avoid any damage to your plug-in AC power adapter.
